I have to say that I’ve always been incredibly grateful for my public defender office. The office is absolutely incredible and so supportive, and so dedicated to helping people with their needs no matter the situation.

This county is also very rural, so many of the cases that the public defender’s office handles are very rural. When I worked there I was often approached by people asking me what kind of case I was handling. Since the majority of the cases I handled were for people who had committed crimes, I was frequently asked if I had a DUI, and I always responded that I did.
It’s funny because people ask me what type of case I’m dealing with, but they usually forget that it makes no difference, because when you’re in Santa Clara County, you’re dealing with many different types of cases. Some of the cases I was asked about had to do with minor traffic tickets, while others were more serious and involved very serious crimes.
For the most part, the public defender in Santa Clara County is the best in the nation with regard to personal injury and property cases. The public defender’s office is one of the largest in the county and handles all civil actions. For the most part, public defenders handle cases involving DUI’s and speeding tickets, but some cases go back and forth, with the public defender’s office finding cases on their own and then handing them over to the clerk’s office to handle.

I’m a huge fan of public defenders. After graduating from law school, I worked as a public defender in Santa Clara County for roughly four years. I can definitely say it’s a job I truly love, and I often feel like I’m fighting crime in this job, but I am also constantly battling the feeling that this job is not my passion. And I believe that feeling is a part of our society today.
