Paresh Patel MD is an award-winning psychiatrist and clinical psychologist in Los Angeles, CA. He has a practice in the Bay Area and is a Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the John J. Olin School of Medicine of the University of Southern California.
Paresh Patel MD is one of the most popular and recognizable people in the Bay Area. He is the author of over a dozen books, including the recent ‘The New Psychology of Leadership’ which is a great read for anyone looking for a new way to get things done.
He also has co-authored several research studies examining the link between the development of mental illness and the use of psychotropic medication. Most recently he co-authored a study examining the relationship between the use of psychotropic medication and suicide rates among patients with Major Depressive Disorder.
Paresh is currently a PhD candidate in the psychology department at UCLA, and he is currently studying the relationship of depression, bipolar disorder, and substance abuse to suicide rates.
He also recently co-authored a paper on the use of antidepressants for the treatment of suicidal ideation.
According to Paresh, the use of psychotropic medication is not related to suicide rates in patients with major depressive disorder. In fact, he doesn’t think it has any effect at all, instead he sees it as a good thing.
The big problem is that people with bipolar disorder have a very high suicide rate, so they tend to be treated with antipsychotics, which are the best ones for the symptoms of the disease. It is also known that many patients with bipolar disorder do not really show the full spectrum of symptoms, and this is associated with a much higher rate of suicide.
Well, I think the biggest problem is that people with depression or bipolar disorder are not very good at managing their symptoms. A lot of people with major depressive disorder also have a family history of suicide, and by the time they reach middle age, they have a much higher suicide rate.
I don’t think we’ll ever get there. Many patients with bipolar disorder, and possibly depression, do not recognize the symptoms and thus do not get treatment. If you’re depressed, you should see a psychiatrist, and if you have bipolar, you should see a psychiatrist.
