A lot of what we do is in reaction to what happened, not in reaction to what we’re doing. When we start to worry about tomorrow, we end up worrying about our current situation. When we start to focus on the future instead of the present, we begin to look for problems to solve instead of solutions. When we start to think of ourselves as the solution instead of the problem, we begin to forget that we’re the source of all problems.
That reminds me of a quote I came across: “The only thing you have to fear is not getting enough sleep.” It’s the same thing that applies to being creative. We sometimes get overly wrapped up in our day-to-day concerns because we’re too distracted by them to allow ourselves to notice the beauty in what we’re doing. This is where we often forget to look at our surroundings and see things for what they are, and that’s always the best thing to do.
This is where we can get a lot of our creative energy from. When we are creating something, we need to make sure that we are not just creating thoughts or ideas. We need to look at the world around us and say, “Well, we should do this instead.” If we do so, we can then be sure we didn’t create something that we couldn’t have created even if we had put in the time and energy to do so.
This is true for any creative endeavor. You can go out on a limb and do something and then look back and say, Oh, look at that! I could have done that! And then you can take a moment to reflect and say, I could have done that, but I didnt do that. It also applies to our art. We create a lot of art by creating images that we can see from a distance.
And if I were to create a painting I could say, “I could have done that,” but really I couldn’t. That’s the nature of art. I can’t go back in time and say, “I could have done that,” because no matter how I try I just can’t.
It’s a great way to be self-aware, but it’s also a great way to be self-doubting, because when we think we can do something and think we can’t, that’s a sign that we’re not really trying hard enough to achieve our goals.
Well, if you want to be self-aware you have to be self-doubting. And this is why so many people just say, “i can never get good enough” or “i can never be good enough for someone” or “i cant ever be good enough for someone” and then they always run away. Because they are not self-aware all the time.
The truth is, everyone is pretty self-aware. It just doesn’t seem to be good enough. We are always trying to be better, and the best way to do that is to prove it to ourselves. There is no point in self-doubt if you are not questioning yourself.
Austin Wheeler is a self-aware man who has spent his entire adult life building self-sufficiency and self-improvement. His self-doubt and self-criticism are not a part of his personality; he simply refuses to acknowledge them. Instead, he tries to prove to himself that he can do whatever the hell he wants, whenever he wants, and that this is the best answer for his life. It’s not that he doesn’t like himself.
